New York City Prepares to Carry On Through Snowstorm, ASP Suspended

New York City is expecting its second snowstorm in a week: early Sunday morning at 3am, but the city is prepared to continue its business as usual.

While weather forecasters predict anywhere between three to eight inches of snow to accumulate tonight and tomorrow, Mayor Bill de Blasio told NY1 earlier tonight, “We’re ready for anything.”

“Sanitation will be out in force tonight: brining the streets, salting the streets,” the mayor said. “A lot of plows will be out tomorrow. We need people to stay off the roads, especially for your own safety, because it will be slick out there. So, please, if you can stay home, change your plans and [do] not go out, and especially, [do] not use a car. Please help us out, help out the men and women of Sanitation so they can get everything cleared out Sunday, so we can have a much smoother Monday.”

While the roadway portion of Open Restaurants will have to be closed so that the City of New York Department of Sanitation (DSNY) can plow, the parts of restaurants that are open on the sidewalks will still be open for takeout and delivery, said the mayor.

In addition, vaccination centers will be open tomorrow, and Mayor de Blasio said they should be open Monday as well, along with the city’s schools.

“That's the plan right now, but we're going to clearly keep people updated as we get more developments and more information,” said the mayor, who also cancelled alternate side parking until next Shabbos.

Although the snow will force DSNY to interrupt trash pick-up once again for snow removal, the mayor did not sound worried that trash would remain on the streets for too long.

“[Tonight storm] is not going to throw things off for too long,” said the mayor, who called tonight’s storm a mere “hiccup.” “[The snowfall] means we’ve got to throw everything we got tomorrow into the salting, the plowing, just getting things back to regular.

“But then immediately Sanitation will go back to work with the trash pickup.”
