NYC Officials Unveil New Structural BQE Design
By BoroPark24 Staff
The NYC Department of Transportation has released a new design and plan for the BQE, which includes a significant delay in the long-awaited reconstruction of a deteriorating section.
This design is part of a trio of proposals, one of which includes a creative solution to extend Brooklyn Bridge Park, effectively hiding the roadway.
The updated construction blueprint calls for a 20% wider roadway to meet federal requirements. However, city officials have yet to detail how they will manage construction without disrupting current traffic patterns or affecting the promenade above.
Officials estimated that the latest proposal would require $5 billion and an additional five years to secure federal approval before construction can commence.
Originally, the DOT warned that the triple-cantilever could fail by 2026. However, in 2021, the department extended the expected lifespan by reducing the number of lanes on the affected BQE section from three to two, alleviating some of the immediate structural stress.
