NYC Takes Staten Island Ferry Off Chol Hamoed Attraction List
New York - Rabbanim and doctors ban people from leaving home, but the de Blasio administration is removing one item from the Chol Hamoed attraction list for the intrepid who may do so anyhow -- the Staten Island Ferry.
Since the coronavirus pandemic reached New York City, ridership on the ferry has plummeted 90 percent, and the ride has been operating on a limited schedule, with a significantly reduced staff. With Pesach beginning Wednesday evening, the transportation commissioner issued a reminder to the public that sightseeing rides are dangerous during this period. Rides should be strictly for essential travel, she said.
We understand and value the tradition of trips being taken to see the beauty of New York harbor during holidays, but this year is sadly different,” said Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. “As we try to keep our Staten Island Ferry workers and passengers safe, the ferry rides should now be limited to the most essential trips."
