Overwhelming Number of New Yorkers Support ‘Ranked Choice’ Voting, Poll Finds
Following the first citywide election in which
the “ranked choice” voting system was used (enabling voters to select their
candidates in order of preference), a poll by “Common Cause New York” and
“Ranked The Vote NYC,” finds that more than 75% of New Yorkers would like to
see this system used again in future elections.
The survey found that 77% would like to see the ranked-choice voting system used in the future, 83% actually “ranked” more than one candidate, and 95% found the ballot simple to fill out.
As we have reported on Election Day, in the event that a candidate does not reach 50% of the vote, the candidate with the least votes, loses their votes, and we allocate the second choice of these voters toward their other candidates. This is repeated until one candidate reaches 50%.
This system ensures that the voters’ voices are heard more than ever, given that their votes are not lost if their first choice does not win.
