Recall Issued for Drizzilicious Mini Rice Cakes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Snack Innovations Inc in Piscataway, New Jersey, has issued a voluntary recall for Drizzilicious mini rice cakes due to an undeclared peanut allergen. 

Several batches of the mini rice cakes and drizzled popcorn are included due to an undeclared peanut residue that might be in the products, possibly endangering those with peanut allergies.

"Consumers who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts," the company declared in a statement, "can run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product."

"This recall did not affect the kashrus status of the product," the quality manager at Snack Innovations Inc told BoroPark24 in an exclusive interview. "We had the rabbi here just yesterday asking some questions, but nothing was affected for the kosher consumers." 

The quality manager explained that the recall was prompted by a notification received from the supplier on Tuesday, January 17, regarding placing a hold on the products that utilized a specific ingredient. After further information was forthcoming from the supplier regarding a soy lecithin additive,  Snack Innovations issued the voluntary recall due to the possibility of peanuts being in the product. 

Products affected include Drizzilicious Mini Rice Cakes 4 ounce and .74 ounce and popcorn 3.6 ounce in branded pillow bags and stand-up zip pouches. The products that have been recalled and the specific lot codes can be found here.

"When we became aware of the issue, we called the FDA," the quality manager relayed, "and began working towards retrieving and destroying the product. We will start production back up soon. A recall takes a lot of work and involves tremendous costs; besides that, it doesn't look good for the company, even if the issue was not our fault. Going forward, we will have a recall and traceability plan which will need to be followed to make sure this doesn't happen again." 

Those with peanut allergies should return the affected package to the place of purchase for a full refund. Drizzilous rice cakes are available on Amazon and in local stores.
