Tropical Storm Henri May Bring Rain and Wind to Boro Park on Sunday

While the air will feel cool in the mid-80s over Shabbos, the skies will be overcast, as Tropical Storm Henri gathers strength over the Atlantic Ocean, possibly bringing serious rain, wind, and flooding on Sunday and Monday to Boro Park.

Although there is still uncertainty as to what exact direction the storm will take, weather experts predict that there is a 40% chance that local areas could be deluged with rain and hurricane-force wind gusts on Sunday: from midday to afternoon and lasting until early Monday morning, informed weather enthusiast Yaker Biegeleisen.

“Because of the possible storm, Boro Parkers who are coming home from the Catskills should make alternate plans to leave very early Sunday morning or Motzei Shabbos to get back home safely,” Mr. Biegeleisen said.

When winds reach 74 miles per hour, tropical storms, which start as mere “tropical disturbances,” become hurricanes, as wind speeds increase, reported Adam Sobel, who is a professor and director of the Initiative on Extreme Weather and Climate at Columbia University. Tropical disturbances become tropical depressions, and then tropical storms, as wind gusts gain in speed.

In the past 24 hours in the Atlantic Ocean, Tropical Storm Henri has been fighting winds coming at it from different angles to gather vertical strength and transform into a fierce hurricane.
