Boro Park Jewish Community Council and Senator Felder Announce Fire Safety Awareness Initiative

BORO PARK - The Boro Park Jewish Community Council and Senator Simcha Felder announced a new safety initiative ahead of Chanukah to promote awareness of fire prevention and protection. In addition, the BPJCC is partnering with the American Red Cross to distribute a free fire safety package to members of the public.

The package will include a free smoke detector for each room in the house, along with free installation by a qualified technician. A safety professional will also come to your house and offer a free personalized fire evacuation assessment plan.

“I am deeply grateful to Rabbi Avi Greenstein of the Boro Park JCC for his partnership in this mission to make our homes and communities safer,” said Senator Simcha Felder, D-Brooklyn. “Together with the American Red Cross, we have installed free smoke detectors in over 800 homes in neighborhoods throughout my district. Still, we are tragically reminded every year that home fires can happen to anyone at any time. Please don’t wait for the next tragedy to take advantage of this lifesaving program. Smoke alarms save lives.”

“We at the BPJCC are proud to fill this massive need,” said Rabbi Avi Greenstein, the CEO of the BPJCC. “A fire can rob a person of his possessions and, in a worst case scenario, destroy a family for generations. It’s incredibly sad when we hear of a family in our community go through this. We are thrilled to partner with Senator Simcha Felder and the American Red Cross in sponsoring this fire safety awareness initiative, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of it.”

Chanukah is a time of gladness, when families get together and enjoy each other's company. Forgetting to extinguish a Chanukah candle prior to leaving the house may G-d forbid have catastrophic consequences. Errant flames have in the past devastated families and ravished lives and homes in ways that could have been easily prevented. The BPJCC and Senator Felder fire safety awareness initiative ensures that members of the community have a feeling of security during this time of joy.

As part of the awareness campaign, the initiative is reminding renters that renters’ insurance can cost as little as $100 a month. For a family recovering from a fire, having enough money to rebuild is a huge relief.

The package is free for all members of the public, regardless of income. Stop by at the Boro Park Jewish Community Council office at 1310 46th Street or register at www.bpjcc.org/firesafety.
