BREAKING: Large Sinkhole Suddenly Opens in Bay Ridge

C.G. Hoffman

A large sinkhole has suddenly opened in Bay Ridge, at 68th Street and Sixth Avenue, disrupting traffic while the area was cordoned off. This is not the first time sinkholes have appeared in Bay Ridge, with some frustrated residents naming Bay Ridge the “Sinkhole Capital of the World,” saying city officials are not doing enough regarding the increasing sinkholes in the area.

No injuries were reported, although roads are closed through the early afternoon as investigators try to determine what could have caused the 25 by 15 foot hole, and atleast 20 feet deep, to suddenly open.

Officials updated the public on a possible cause, saying there was a break in a sewer line. Residents on 6th Ave between 67th and 68th Streets are currently without water until repairs are made. There is no information currently on what caused the sewer main to rupture, while the city is now working on restoring water service and ConEd is running a bypass around any damaged electrical lines.
