BPJCC Helps Homeowners Struggling to Meet Mortgage Payments Apply for Up to $50,000 in Federal Aid

New York homeowners who are struggling to meet their mortgage payments as a result of financial hardships that have been caused by the COVID pandemic can apply for up to $50,000 in federal assistance from the New York State Homeowner Assistance Fund (NYS HAF) from Jan. 3 to Feb. 4, 2022.

“A short while ago, the Boro Park Jewish Community Council (BPJCC) was able to assist renters who were unable to meet their rent,” said Avi Greenstein, BPJCC CEO. “We are now pleased to be able to assist homeowners who are struggling.

“COVID has created challenges for all of us and being able to assist so many in this way is the least we can do at the BPJCC.”

Homeowners who are at risk of default, foreclosure, or displacement of the homes in which they live are eligible for assistance if they are:

• Behind or in forbearance on their mortgage

• In default on a reverse mortgage

• Behind on their property taxes, water, or sewage bills

• Behind on monthly maintenance charges of your coop or condo.

• Behind on their chattel loans, retail installment contracts, and other types of home purchase loans of manufactured homes.

Eligible homeowners also must meet the HAF’s income requirements, which vary based on household sizes.

The application might appear complicated, Greenstein said, but the good news is that application assistance is available for Boro Park residents at the BPJCC. To apply, interested homeowners should first visit the BPJCC website at bpjcc.org/mortgageassist to see if they meet the necessary criteria.

Eligible homeowners also can make appointments for application assistance at the BPJCC by calling (718) 972-6600.

For additional questions, homeowners can reach out to Sender Schwartz, the BPJCC’s Director of Special Programs, by emailing him at [email protected].

NYS HAF expects to receive more applicants than the program can fund, so interested applicants are advised to apply as early as possible: before funds run out.
