DSNY Crews Provide Trash and Recycling Collection on Labor Day to Clean Up Storm Debris

Sanitation crews will work on Labor Day, which is Monday, Sept. 6, to both pick up trash and recycling and to clean up storm debris after Hurricane Ida tore through New York City.

Therefore, residents who usually have their garbage and recycling collected on Mondays may place their cans at city curbs, as usual, between 4pm and 12am Sunday evening, said the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), which will continue to collect storm debris throughout the weekend.

Although the DSNY said that their workers likely will take several days to make their ways around the city, New Yorkers do not have to wait for their regular collection days to have their storm debris taken away.

“Residents can place storm debris out at their curbs for collection immediately,” the DSNY said in a press release. “We appreciate patience as we work through the holiday to collect material across the city.”

The DSNY encourages, but does not require, New Yorkers to report to 311 locations that contain piles of storm debris, although all DSNY administrative offices will remain closed on Monday.
