Governor Hochul—who has been the most senior
public official responding to the subway tragedy today, since Mayor Adams is
quarantined with Covid—visited with victims of the shooting this afternoon at
Maimonides Medical Center in Boro Park, after which she held a press
conference.
She noted the tragedies, but also the hope and
the fortitude of New Yorkers in the face of tragedy.
She recounted meeting with a Chinese mother at
the bedside of her son, a 16-year old who suffered injuries to his arm. “I
thank G-d for the talent of the doctors here who were able to restore life to
his thumb. The governor noted how her son was the only person this woman had in
the world.
Hochul decried the terrible scourge of gun
violence in our streets and in our subways, and vowed to combat it in every
possible way.
During the Q&A portion of the press
conference, the governor was asked by Boropark24 whether there would be
increased security during Pesach, in light of these events—to which she
responded “yes.”
Finally, she hailed the tenacity of the MTA
workers and fellow straphangers who rallied to aid their fellow during the
attack.
“New Yorkers can never be kept down,” she
said.
