Fuel-Efficient Drivers Save Thousands of Dollars in Gas Money

Fuel-Efficient Drivers Save Thousands of Dollars in Gas Money

Gas prices keep increasing, however, by adhering to a few tips, drivers can decrease their need for gas, increase their cars’ fuel efficiency, and keep cash in their wallets.

1.  Park farther away from your destination: American drivers, who spend at least 17 hours per year looking for parking, also waste approximately $345 a year in gas, News12 Brooklyn reported.

2.  Travel light: Try not to drive around with heavy loads in your trunks, as extra weight consumes extra gas.

3.  Keep your windows and sunroofs closed on the highway: to reduce “drag,” which decreases your car's fuel efficiency. Even keeping the outside of your car clean reduces its drag and makes it more fuel-efficient.

4.  Avoid excessive idling: If you need to wait in your parked car for more than a minute, switch off the engine, as idling burns more gas than stopping and starting cars up again.

5.  Maintain your car regularly: Get oil changes every 5,000 to 7,500 miles and ensure your air filters, coolant levels, power steering fluid, and brake fluid are all at proper levels for safety and fuel efficiency.

6.  Keep your tires inflated properly: Under-inflated tires are not only dangerous, but they decrease your car’s mileage. Check your car’s manual under “tire maintenance” or inside your car door to determine your tires’ maximum pounds per square inch (PSI).

7.  Drive at moderate speeds: Cars’ gas mileage usually decreases when drivers exceed 50 mph. To save money on gas, drivers should consistently stay at or under speed limits, and use cruise control on long trips.

8.  Drive in measured and moderate ways: Aggressive driving habits, such as gunning the engine, speeding, screeching around corners, and slamming on the gas pedal are major fuel wasters.

9.  Keep your tank at least half-full: If you want until the last minute to fill up, you will have to settle for a higher per-gallon price at the first station you see, rather than shopping around for the best price.

10.  Limit air conditioner use: The Environmental Protection Agency says that car air conditioners increase fuel usage by 25%. Park in the shade and use a windshield sunscreen to keep cars cool in the summer.
