The NYPD data shows that subway crime is up 13% since the start of the year 2024 (although, as we reported today, it is down compared to February of last year). Recently, a train conductor was brutally slashed in Ocean Hill, and a spate of crime was experienced on the New York City subway by riders and commuters.
Amid this, Governor Kathy Hochul and the MTA announced drastic measures to combat crime on the subways. The state will deploy 1000 members of State personnel to assist the NYPD’s mission to further this effort. This includes 250 members from the New York State Police and the MTA Police Department. In addition, Governor Hochul is directing the National Guard to make 750 members available to supplement this effort under the supervision of law enforcement. These checks will be targeted at heavily trafficked locations.
Mayor Eric Adams has said that the NYPD will be reinstituting bag checks at certain checkpoints on the subway across the city, in an effort to reduce crime.
