New York State Automates Speeding Tickets
C.G. Hoffman
New Yorkers may soon be surprised to receive automated speeding tickets in the mail for not following posted speed limits, starting from this week. The New York State Department of Transportation has initiated a new program that automatically detects speeders going over the stated speed limits in specific locations. Using new technology, speeders are clocked automatically and sent tickets in the mail.
New laws legalizing automated speeding tickets were passed in 2021, and the new system is now being implemented in the Hudson Valley and other areas around the state. The system identifies vehicles traveling over the speed limit with cameras that are triggered by radar. The photos capture the distance, the time of travel and the license plate. Technicians then review the data to confirm. If the data is correct, the registered owner of the vehicle will be sent a Notice of Liability via mail.
First time violations will incur a $50 fine. Second violations within 18 months will receive an additional $75 fine. Three or more speeding tickets in an 18 month period will be $100. However, the NYS DOT says that they will not result in points taken off one’s license and that the information will not be sent to insurance companies.
