Commanding Officer Captain Kenneth Herrarte of the 66th Precinct, located in Boro Park, spoke at the Community Council meeting on Thursday evening and gave important updates on security and crime around the neighborhood.

The CO noted that commercial robbery is up 9% over this time last year. He cautioned businesses to take proper precautions such as installing security systems, and even simple technology such as “Ring” doorbells. “Often, these businesses did not even bother to lock their doors, making them easy targets for burglars,” he said.

Herrarte then proceeded to thank Shomrim for the arrest of 4 individuals on Friday December 29 after they broke into a commercial store in middle of the night.

He also spoke about the increase in “snatching incidents,” in which moped drivers sneak up on unassuming pedestrians in the streets and snatch their valuables. The captain assured those in attendance that his officers are working on getting these mopeds, many of which are illegal or stolen, off the road, saying, “we have confiscated over 46 mopeds in a two-week period.

He closed the meeting by saluting one officer Lucas who stopped a robbery in progress on November 14th of last year.
