NYPD Announces Ongoing Reductions in Crime for January

C.G. Hoffman

Crime continued to decline through the month of January, according to the latest statistics from the NYPD. Compared to the same month last year, January 2024 saw significant reductions in murder, burglary and felony assaults. The numbers are also optimistic concerning stolen vehicles, which saw a drop of 3.8%. (1,178 vs. 1,224)

After a slight increase in some crimes during the month of December, January 2024 saw a small reversal of those numbers. Murders decreased by 24.4%, burglary by 19.8%, grand larceny auto by 3.8%, and felony assaults by 1.5%. At the same time, arrests for all major index crimes in the city increased by 5.7%, going from 4,442 in January 2023 to 4,676 in January 2024.

The administration has placed great focus on the reduction of gun violence, and shooting incidents have been reduced by 10.8%. 330 people were arrested for possessing illegal firearms in January, and the NYPD seized 508 guns. More than 14,115 guns have been taken off NYC streets since the beginning of the Adams administration.

There is one area of crime that has not followed the downward trend: Anti Jewish hate crimes. Reflecting the month-by-month increase since October 7 (and even before), the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force investigated 45 anti-Jewish incidents, an increase since last month.
