Overhaul of NYC's Commercial Trash Pickup Delayed until 2024

An overhaul of New York City's commercial waste collection program has been delayed until mid-2024, according to Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Tisch spoke at a City Council oversight hearing on Wednesday morning, saying the initial timeline aiming for an initial rollout of the program by early 2023 was "wildly unrealistic". This is especially so, according to Tisch, given that the City would have to go through procurement for 65 contracts before being able to launch the original program.

Instead, to give the City time to ensure a smooth rollout of the program, the City now plans to launch a pilot program in late 2024 that will cover only one, as of yet undetermined, zone section of the City with the other twenty zones phased in over the following two years.

The new program provides more safety and oversite for sanitation workers while helping the environment by allowing for fewer sanitation trucks on the street at any one time. A maximum of three carters per zone will do the job of the dozens currently passing through New York City neighborhoods.
