Mayor Adams and 14 Big City Mayors Put their Heads Together to Stop Gun Violence

Could going after American gun manufacturers be the answer to stopping the devastating and unending gun violence in big cities nationwide?

“Five manufacturers in this country, including Glock, are producing more than 50% of the guns that are used in crimes,” Mayor Adams said on abc7news this morning before hosting 14 other big city mayors at Gracie Mansion today for a summit called, “Mayors Against Illegal Guns.”

“We have clearly identified that we are dealing with the same problem: a $9 million dollar industry that is turning profits into pain in our communities,” said Mayor Adams. “We want to mobilize, strategize, and learn each other’s best practices.”

More than 110 Americans are killed every day in the US, and more than 220 are injured by guns, pointed out Buffalo Mayor Byrone Brown, who said his community his continuing to heal from the white supremist mass shooting that killed 10 people in a grocery store on May 14.

“United as mayors, we can send a strong message on a national level and the state level,” Mayor Adams said. “We have to stop this senseless over-proliferation of guns.

“We are successfully decreasing shootings and homicides in the city, but we have a long way to go, and the goal is to use a centralized database to show where guns are coming from all the manufacturers.”

Can lawsuits staunch the abundance of gun ownership, when Americans own hundreds of millions of guns that are not sold by the top give gun manufacturers, asked an abc reporter.

“If this were any other industry that was as deadly,” Mayor Jones answered, “then the government would have already acted to make sure that we got rid of whatever was killing our citizens, and we haven’t seen that sort of action from the federal government.

“So we have to look at the root causes and look at other strategies to try to cure gun violence in our communities.”
