Supreme Court Justice was just confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a vote in which 52 senators voted yes, and 48 mmsenators voted no.    Barrett is a favorite among religious conservatives, and she emerged unscathed from what were sometimes contentious Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings.  Barrett, a U.S. federal judge in the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago, is the mother of seven children, one of whom has Down Syndrome and special needs and two of whom are adopted from Haiti.   Barrett, who is 48, also serves as a professor of law at the University of Notre Dame Law School, the school from which she graduated in 1997.   After the ceremony, Barrett thanked her husband, who is the assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Indiana and her U.S. Senate will vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett, whom President Donald Trump nominated on Sept. 26, nine days after the passing of Supreme Court Justice and liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsberg at age 87.    Although Senate Democrats have employed many tactics to delay and block Coney Barrett’s nomination, her confirmation, which requires a majority of Senate votes, is a likely outcome because in the Senate, Republicans outnumber Democrats 53-47.       President Trump’s choice of Judge Barrett, who is a 48-appeals court judge, a professor of law at Notre Dame University, and a mother of seven children, two who of whom are adopted from Haiti, enraged Democrats, who felt that Trump should not be able to nominate a judge with so little time left before the next election.   However, without any reference to how many weeks or months are left in presidential terms, the U.S. Constitution says that presidents nominate the members of the U.S. Supreme Court.   Because Coney Barrett, whom Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has called "the most qualified nominees for judicial service that we have seen in our lifetimes,” would be the sixth conservative justice out of nine, Democrats felt that the country should have waited until after the presidential election on Nov. 3 to choose a new justice to fill Bader Ginsberg’s seat.  In fact, Democrats are so enraged at the idea that President Trump nominated a conservative judge to the U.S. Supreme Court so close to the next election that Senate Democrats threatened to filibuster or delay through the political obstruction, Coney Barrett’s confirmation.   Additionally, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has hinted that if elected, he would “stack the court” by adding more liberal judges to the U.S. Supreme Court, which does not have a maximum number of justices set by the U.S. Constitution.   Although Biden has been asked repeatedly whether he will “stack the court” he has not committed to an answer, however,  yesterday on the television news program “60 Minutes,” Biden said he would establish a bipartisan commission of scholars to study a possible overhaul of the court system.    “I will ask them to, over 180 days, come back to me with recommendations as to how to reform the court system because it’s getting out of whack,” said Biden, who by “getting out whack,” seemed to mean that the majority of the judges of the U.S. Supreme Court does not currently reflect his beliefs or the beliefs of his party.  During Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearings, Democrats tried to attack everything about the judge from her devout Catholic beliefs, to asking, despite a lack of any evidence, whether she has ever committed any crimes, and whether she is racist, (which is unlikely as she has two black children.)    Perhaps the most irrelevant question of the hearing came last Wednesday when Republican Sen. In New York, city, state, and federal taxes could rise to more than 62 percent. The Biden Administration could also remove the $10,000 cap on state and local deductions, which lower the above-average earners' tax rates. By 2030, Biden's tax plan will lead to a 6.5 percent decline in after-tax income for the top one percent of taxpayers and a 1.7 percent decrease in after-tax income for all taxpayers. Cuomo last week called red, orange, and yellow to indicate, in descending order, the seriousness of upticks of COVID and the intensifications of restrictions.      At least five of those summonses were given to congregations that were not in compliance with Gov. Cuomo’s restrictions, the city said.   Tosh and Munkach were among the dozens of shuls in Boro Park that were issued summonses for noncompliance with Gov. Cuomo’s executive order last week that restrict attendance at houses of worship in red zones to 25% capacity, or a maximum of 10 people.   Gov. Cuomo additionally, closed the public and private schools, non-essential businesses, and said that restaurants are now limited to take-out only.  Last week’s crackdown came amid alarming spikes in COVID-19 cases from Borough Park, Brooklyn, to Kew Gardens, Queens. New York State also has identified red zones in Broome, Orange and Rockland counties.     New York state last week had a very low COVID positivity rate of 0.84%, however, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today that the red zone areas had a positivity rate of 5.74% on Shabbos and a positivity rate of 6.13% over the past week.   As consequences to violating his restrictions, Gov. They should stay quarantined.” Right now, for those who don’t have antibodies, COVID is surging and even masks won’t help, the trained paramedic said.    “People without antibodies need to stay home right now,” insisted the Hatzolah volunteer, who explained that the COVID rate is going up because the people who don’t have antibodies are not being careful.   “People are asking me,” the Hatzolah leader said, “Can I go to a small shul?”  “I say, ‘No!’ Even a small shul might have one person who has it, and then you are going to get it.” “I tell people who have not yet had COVID, ‘Go back to where you were on Pesach. Go to your porch. If there are neighbors, fine, daven [socially distanced from them,] if not, then daven yourself.”  Of course, wanting to keep Boro Parkers safe and healthy, the Hatzolah volunteer says he has “the most conservative perspective toward the lockdown in Boro Park.”   However, on Aug. 20, after 16 people tested positive for COVID-19 after attending a wedding in Boro Park, Dave A. Chokshi, MD, New York City’s health commissioner, held a conference call with members of the Jewish press to debunk the popularly-held opinion that everyone with COVID antibodies is immune to the deadly disease.  “Everyone, whether they have positive or negative antibodies for COVID-19, must  people continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of this disease,” explained Dr. Chokshi. “Until we have scientific evidence that people with antibodies are immune to COVID-19,  our job as healthcare providers is to protect people and prevent further suffering.”   “The duration of any immunity that exists and how protective it is remains uncertain, which is why regardless of whether you have a positive antibody test or a negative one, we all must continue to adhere to preventive and protective measures, such as face coverings, hand washing, and keeping distance from others. “These safety measures save lives,” Dr. Chokshi said.   For the last days of Yom Tov, and always, even people with antibodies, should take care to practice proper hand hygiene, explained the Hatzolah volunteer, who mentioned that hand-shaking, dancing, shared siddurs, Chumashim, Torahs, and other seforim, are all dangerous sites of virus transmission among people.  “People have to wash their hands with soap throughout the day,” reminded the Hatzolah volunteer. “Even not just during the time of coronavirus, but throughout the flu and cold season, and in general, people should practice more hand hygiene.”   A more widespread use of hand sanitizer also can help to kill germs and viruses from spreading in the community, he said.    “The more people see hand sanitizer out there in shuls and other environments, the more people get used to using it,” the paramedic said. “When I come into a place where the hand sanitizer is right there, I use it, and everyone else should as well.”   “The more we can put hand sanitizers for people to use, the better it is for everyone’s safety, and not just for during this COVID surge.”   Other safety tips the Hatzolah volunteer pointed out for the second days were to encourage everyone to stay far away from any protests that are not organized by elected community leaders, and for parents to keep an eye not only on the whereabouts of their children, but also on their parents.     “It is important for people to check in on their elderly parents, and make sure that they are OK, eating right, drinking right, and taking their medications.” Often during Yom Tov, parents stay with their children or in unfamiliar environments, and they feel displaced, they don’t have the foods they usually eat, or they forget to take their medications, the volunteer said.    “We get calls about people’s parents all the time over Yom Tov,” he said. 0110/9/20, 8:29 AM82497President Trump Leaving Hospital Tonight at 6:30pmpresident-trump-leaving-hospital-tonight-at-6-30pm By Yehudit Garmaise     President Donald J. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!” After being tested as COVID-positive on Friday, Trump was helicoptered to Walter Reed, where doctors became concerned by his dropping oxygen levels and spiking temperature, according to multiple reports. Lindsay Graham (SC-R) announced that Barrett’s four-day confirmation hearings, which are sure to be contentious,will begin on  Monday, Oct. 12.    Many Democrats have vowed to delay or derail Barrett’s confirmation process as they argue that President Trump should not be able to replace Ginsburg because  the next presidential election is 37 days away.   In addition, if Barrett is confirmed, to offset the conservatism of Trump’s three U.S. Supreme Court nominees, if presidential candidate Joe Biden wins the election, many Democrats plan to add liberal justices to “stack the court,” so that the Supreme Court tilts left ideologically.    As for the success of Barrett’s nomination, with likely nothing in her personal history to discredit her, conservatives are bracing for attacks on Barrett’s Roman Catholicism, an issue that infamously came up during Barrett’s 2017 nomination to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, when Sen. Dianne Feinstein, (CA-D), expressed the idea shared by many Democrats now and at the time, that judges who are religious could not render fair and unbiased legal decisions.   During the hearings, Sen. She is reportedly mulling a run for NYC Mayor.The department said her last day on the job would be September 18. Garcia joined the department in 2014 as their 43rd commissioner. She is now considering running for mayor but has not officially announced plans for the 2021 race. During her time with the Department of Sanitation, Garcia worked on numerous modernizing projects such as the city’s snow response structure and creating a system expected to send zero waste to landfills by 2030. Garcia also served as Vice-Chair of the NYCHA Board of Directors, appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio. From February through July 2019, she served as Interim Chair and CEO of NYCHA. Call volume is high due to the storm and downed trees. New Yorkers should continue to report downed trees to 311 and call 911 to report life threatening emergencies."The Press Secretary said further that, "Huge effort by the 311 team today, which more than tripled its normal staffing numbers to over 600 working simultaneously. As of 3pm, 311 had already received 110,000 calls. Countless businesses faced lockdown orders that led to many constituents losing their jobs. While many filed for unemployment benefits, the sheer volume of applications overwhelmed the system and thousands did not receive a response while remaining desperate for economic relief.Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein’s office received thousands of calls from frantic constituents who needed assistance. In response, the Assemblyman’s office had three staff members solely designated to assisting constituents with unemployment and ensuring that each individual’s application was completed and processed by the Department of Labor. The reason why applications were not processed varied from case to case, ranging from incomplete information to processing errors to the system being overwhelmed.
